Chin na is the Chinese art of seizing
and grappling. Unlike wrestling, chin na
techniques are not mainly used to throw the opponent to the ground. Chin na
techniques are designed to control an opponent with grabs, holds, and joint locks
which neutralize the energy of an opponent’s attack by dissolving their angle
of attack, disrupting his balance, and applying painful pressure against his muscles, joints, and
connective tissue.
Chin
na
techniques range from safely immobilizing an opponent’s ability to move, to
breaking or dislocating bones. While chin
na techniques are intended to keep the defender on his feet, if the fight
does end up on the ground the methods become much like the submission fighting
tools of Grecko-Roman wrestlers in arts such as Pankration.
